Pedigree Pens provided a facility of 27 pens.
The centre in Redcross Street,
which will include the new cattery, supplied by ourselves, replaces a
smaller facility
on the same site.
The old centre, built in 1963, closed its doors in July 1999 when it became
clear the building no longer met modern standards. Domestic pets then
had to be taken to other RSPCA
centres or to private kennels and catteries, which meant inspectors and
animal collectors sometimes had
to travel up to 30
miles.
But help came from the St John Ambulance Brigade,
housed next door.
The brigade allowed the RSPCA
to extend its old premises to create a new cattery and administration
block.
